Introduction

Department of Geography, Chiang Mai University is the first Geography Department in Thailand. It was established in conjunction with Chiang Mai University in 1964. At the beginning, it was taught in the Bachelor of Science program in Geography and later opened a Master of Science Degree in Geography in 1982, which was later renamed a Master of Science in Geography and Geoinformatics.  Over a period of more than 50 years, the Department has produced graduates  to work for government agencies and private sectors both locally and internationally.

Department of Geography has been recognized for its quality and academic strength in both teaching and research that integrates geography and various academic fields. The Department has academic cooperation with academic institutions, government agencies and many private companies in the country. For international collaboration, the department has extensive experience working with academic institutions around the world including Asia, Europe, America and Australia through organizing workshops at the international level, special lecture and field works. In addition, the Department has managed its academic centers that support research and academic services performed by the faculty members of the department, including the Geo-Informatics and Space Technology Centre (Northern Region) (GISTNORTH) in collaboration with the Geo-Informatics and Space Technology Development Agency (Public Organization) (GISTDA) and Regional Center for Climate and Environmental Studies (RCCES).

At present, the Department offers a Bachelor of Science Program in Geography, Master of Science Program in Geography and Geoinformatics and is in the process of opening a Doctorate Program in Geography (International program).
